Best plants for a balcony garden
A garden on every balcony.
Not every plant thrives in a container on an exposed balcony. The best performers share a few traits: they tolerate restricted roots, cope with the dry-fast watering cycle of pot soil, and stay compact enough to avoid constant pruning.
For edibles, compact tomato varieties such as Tumbler or Tiny Tim fruit heavily from a 30 cm pot. Bush beans outperform climbing varieties when you have no trellis. Lettuce and cut-and-come-again salad leaves suit window boxes perfectly and regrow after each cut. Dwarf peppers and chillies love the warmth reflected from a south-facing wall.
For colour and pollinators, trailing petunias cascade over railing planters and need almost no deadheading. Calibrachoa tolerates wind better than most annuals. Nasturtiums fill gaps quickly, tolerate lean soil, and are fully edible, flowers, leaves, and seeds.
Herbs deserve their own cluster. Basil, thyme, chives, parsley, and mint all thrive in small pots and get harvested often enough that they never stagnate. Keep mint in its own container or it will crowd everything else.
